Annapurna is considered as one of the major peaks in Nepal — a list that includes Everest, Manaslu, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Lhotse. The Annapurna Circuit Trek goes around the massif passing through several villages at different elevations. It offers beautiful views of the rugged Nepalese mountains. The AC is widely considered as one of the best long-distance treks in the world. Mountaineers and backpackers from all over the world flock to the country to experience it. A lot of changes have occurred since it was first opened to foreigners in 1977 but it still retains its charm. Consider the following if you are planning to sign up:
Trek Duration
The trek can take anywhere between 8 days up to 25 days. Only the fittest can complete this in single digits. After all, the route can be as long as 230 kilometers or 145 miles. Most commercial outfits that cater to the public have an itinerary that is 20 days or more. These include acclimatization, rest days, and side trips. Plenty of sites can be included to the regular route including the Annapurna Base Camp. It can also be shortened if necessary by exiting at villages located before the final stop. Most make the trek counterclockwise for a more gradual incline.
Circuit Weather
Much of the mountains in Nepal are not suitable for climbing or trekking during the rainy season. It would be too dangerous and uncomfortable. However, the AC is an exception thanks to its location that is shielded from the monsoons. Those who wish to avoid the big crowds can go during the off-season. They will just have to make sure that they are prepared for the climate. December to March is the coldest period. June to September is the monsoon period. April to May is warmer. October to November provides the clearest skies and is the most popular for climbers.
Accommodations
Trekking companies will usually coordinate with the tea houses and lodges along the route to provide accommodations for their clients. These stops will provide trekkers with the chance to interact with the locals. They can rest their weary legs and recover for the days ahead. By staying at high-altitude villages, they can acclimatize and have an easier time walking across the next parts of the route. However, those that wish to make several side trips might need to bring tents if there is no available lodging where they wish to go.
If a long trek across remote terrain appeals to you, then give the Annapurna Circuit Trek a good look.
